For people immigrating to the United States, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the most relevant federal department as it processes their cases. The agency operates through its official website, phone services, and offices located inside and outside the country.

USCIS Services

When it comes to information about immigration options and processes, USCIS’s official website is the main resource. The site has dedicated sections for citizenship, green cards, laws, and news. There’s also an interactive virtual assistant or bot called Ask Emma.

Besides these resources, there is also a tools section that provides you with information related to your case. You can use this section to check your case status, calculate form filing fees, check case processing times, file forms online, ask for information/clarifications, etc.

Field offices take care of the services that can’t be provided online. A typical field office does the following:

  • Interviews applicants
  • Provide supplementary information and services
  • Arrange naturalization ceremonies

Case Processing Times

  • Naturalization (N-400): 16.5 months to 19.5 months
  • Certificate of Citizenship (N-600): 7.5 months to 16 months
  • Citizenship and Issuance of Certificate Under Section 322 (N-600K): 8 months to 23.5 months.

The USCIS now gives the processing time as a range for many of its forms. To understand the range, let’s consider the processing time of the N-400 mentioned above. The 16.5 months is the time it takes to process 50% of the cases, and the 19.5 months is the duration for completing 93% of the applications.

Besides the three forms mentioned above, the USCIS gives the time as a range for the I-90, I-526, I-817, I-829, and some other forms mentioned here.
