If you’re looking to immigrate to the U.S. and you’re not an asylum seeker, your case will be handled by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) section of the dept. of homeland security. Besides providing information about immigration options through its website, the federal agency has a service center inside and outside the country. One of these types of service centers is called a field office.

The agency divides its service centers into four Regions – Northeast, Southeast, Central, and Western – and 26 Districts. A District often has more than one field office. Some Districts have jurisdiction over areas across state lines as well.

Case Processing Times

The time it takes the field office to decide can vary depending on the form type and location, so it’s useful to get an estimate for it from the agency. Processing information is another service that’s available online. Here are the processing times for three different forms at the Spokane field office:

  • Citizenship and Issuance of Certificate Under Section 322 (N-600K): 10 to 22.5 months
  • Certificate of Citizenship (N-600): 6.5 to 14.5 months
  • Naturalization (N-400): 12 to 17.5 months

If you don’t get your times in the arrangement or style given above, that’s because the USCIS is currently trailing a new way to calculate times. The trial includes many different types of forms and the forms mentioned above are part of it. The figures represent the times for completing half and almost all (93%) of the applications.

On the same page as the time duration for your case, you can also find the exact date for case inquiries. Most of the cases are processed within the provided times but some can take longer. If the inquiry date comes after the date mentioned on your notice as the Receipt Date, then you can inquire about the delayed processing.

Online Account

Creating an account on the USCIS site is compulsory if you want to submit your application online. The process of creating an account is straightforward, and the agency provides step-by-step instructions on the process as well. If you need help with creating an account or logging into your account, call the contact center for assistance. The following USCIS page contains information about its online tools.
